Types of Packaging Materials

There are different types of materials used to create packaging materials. Knowing the different options available to you helps you decide which material suits your product. Here are a few of some of the most common types of materials used to manufacture packaging materials.

1.    Acrylonitrile-styrene Resin (AS)


Acrylonitrile-styrene resin is a type of plastic that is made of styrene and acrylonitrile. Also known as SAN, it is used to instead of polystyrene because of it has a greater thermal resistance.

Acrylonitrile-styrene resin is not very hard. It is brittle and a crisp sound when tapped. The transparent color of acrylonitrile-styrene resin, and the blueish background color makes it a good choice for packaging cosmetics and food products. It is used to make lotion bottles, small-capacity cream bottle, as well as vacuum bottles. AS/SAN plastics are considered safe as they do not leach toxins.

2.     Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene (ABS)

ABS plastics are part of the engineering plastics family. It contains synthetic resin, plasticizer, stabilizer, and colorant. ABS plastics are not environmentally friendly and have a fairly high level of hardness.

ABS plastics are used in a lot of consumer products and can be used to package food products for frozen storage or at room temperature.

It is generally used in cosmetics packaging, for making the inner cover, and the shoulder cover material. The color is usually yellow or milky white.

3.    Polyethylene (PP, PE)

Polyethylene is environmentally friendly material and can directly come in contact with cosmetics and food. It is the main material for filling organic skin care products.

PP/PE material is whitish and translucent. Depending on different molecular structures, three different degrees of softness and hardness can be achieved.

Pump heads of lotion pumps mostly uses PP material, ( which are made with production machines/injection molding machine). The outer rings of lotion pumps are made with anodized aluminum sleeve. By electroplating the material,  we can achieve bronzing and silvering.

4.    Polyethylene terephthalate (PET)

PET materials are popular and with good reason. It is an environmentally friendly material that can easily be recycled compared to most plastics. PET plastics are also safe to directly contact cosmetic and food products.

It is the main material for filling organic skin care products. PET materials are soft and the naturally transparent.

5.    PCTA, PETG or Poly (ethylene terephthalateco-1,4-cylclohexylenedimethylene terephthalate)

PCTA or PETG plastics are environmentally friendly material that are safe for use with cosmetics and food products. It is widely used for packaging organic skin care products.

PCTA/PETG is soft and transparent. They are also easy to scratch. It is commonly manufactured by the printing process.

6.    Acrylic:

Acrylic is well-known as a hard, transparent plastic. Although acrylic is transparent, it has a whitish tint when it is thick. In order to maintain the transparent texture, acrylic is often sprayed in the outer bottle or painted on during injection molding.

Types of Packaging Bottles


1.    Vacuum Bottles

These types of bottles rely on air pressure. The sprinklers are equipped with a chicken tip (there is a full plastic or a layer of anodized aluminum), and the duckbill flat head is covered with a layer of plastic.

Parts of vacuum bottles: The lid, the shoulder sleeve, vacuum pumps, and the pistons.

2.    Lotion Bottles

These bottles are very popular in the cosmetics and cleaning industry. Most of them are equipped with hoses inside. Most are externally coated with acrylics while the inside of the bottle has a PP material quality. The cover is externally acrylic and internally made with ABS.

3.    Perfume Bottles

Perfume bottles as the name suggests are used to package perfumes.

The internal components are made of glass and the outside of the bottle aluminum (rotating and non-rotating according to the lid)

The inner liners of perfume bottles are mostly made of glass or PP plastics. If it will be stored for a long time, then glass with a large capacity is required. While PP plastics is suitable for short-term storage with a small capacity. PCTA and PETG are not usually used to store perfume.

4.    Blow-molded Bottles

Blow-molded bottles are mostly made of PET material. Blow molding is the direct blowing of preforms. The major characteristic of blow-molded bottles is that there is a bump at the bottom of the bottle.

Spray Head, Lotion Pump, Hand Pump and Length Measurement of Plastic Packaging Products


In this section, we are going to cover some of the basic parts of plastic packaging that you should be aware of. This will help you know what to look out for when you decide to order packaging products from a manufacturer.

·       Nozzles

Bayonet (half bayonet aluminum, full bayonet aluminum) and screw mouth nozzles are all made of plastic, but some are covered with a layer of anodized aluminum.

·       Lotion pump

Lotion pump specifications range from 16ml to 38ml, and the water output is 0.28ml/time to 3.1ml/time. It is generally used in creams and washing products.

·       Hand-washing pump

This pump relies on both the components of the bottle and air suction to dispense the fluid. Hand-washing pumps have a large caliber for the screw ports. An aluminum cover made of anodized aluminum can also be placed on the large screw cap and the headgear.

·       Length measurement

The length of the suction pipe is measured from the gasket to the end of the hose.

Specification classification: Mainly plastic packaging products rely on inner diameter or large circle height classification. The inner diameter is the innermost diameter in the pump.

Sprinkler head: 15/18/20MM, all plastic is also divided into 18/20/24MM

Lotion pump: 18/20/24 MM

Hand pump: 24/28/32(33) MM

Large circle height: 400/410/415 (this is a simplified specification code it is not the actual height)

Note: The expression of specification classification is as follows: Lotion pump: 24/415

Measuring measurement method: (This actually the dose of liquid sprayed by the nozzle at a time.)

There are peeling measurement method and absolute value measurement method. The error is within 0.02g. The size of the pump body is also used to determine the measurement.

Surface Coloring Process: How Plastic Packaging is Given it’s Color

  • Anodized aluminum: aluminum exterior, wrapped in a layer on the inner plastic.   
  • Electroplating (UV): Compared with the spray pattern, the effect is bright.                       
  • Spray: The color compared with electroplating is dark and dull.                                           
  • Frosted: A layer of matte texture.
  • Inner bottle, outer spray:

It is sprayed on the outside of the inner bottle. From the appearance, there is a clear gap between the outside of the inner bottle and the outer bottle. The spray area is small when viewed from the side.

  • Inner spray of outer bottle:

It is sprayed on the inner side of the outer bottle, and the area is larger from the appearance. The vertical plane has a smaller area. And there is no gap with the inner bottle.

  • Brushed gold and silver: It is actually a film, carefully observe the gaps that can be found on the bottle body.
  • Secondary oxidation:

It is to carry out secondary oxidation on the original oxide layer, so as to achieve a pattern covered with a dull surface on the glossy surface or a pattern with a glossy surface on the dull surface. Mostly used for logo making.

  • Injection color:

Toners are added to raw materials during product injection. The process is relatively cheap (explanation: cheap price). You can also add bead powder or too white powder to make the PET transparent color become opaque (add some toner to adjust the color). The generation of water ripple is related to the amount of added pearl powder.

The Printing Process: How Text/Graphics are Printed on Graphics

1.    Silkscreen

The effect after printing has obvious unevenness because it is a layer of ink. The silk-screened regular bottle (cylindrical type) can be printed at one time. There is also a one-time fee for other irregular pieces. We can also brand your packaging for a one-time fee. You can choose between two types of ink. Dry ink and UV ink. Self-drying ink is falls of easily and can be wiped off with alcohol. While UV ink has a distinct bumpy feel and is difficult to wipe off.

Hot stamping:

In this process, a thin layer of paper is hot stamped on the bottle. With the silk screen printing process, we can avoid the uneven feel of the silk screen printing method.

With automation hot stamping can be done at full speed. It is done after thermal transfer. Otherwise a good foil stamping paper can also be directly stamped. Hot stamping is not allowed on aluminum plastic.

Water transfer: It is a random printing process carried out in water. The printed lines are inconsistent. And the price is more expensive.

Thermal transfer: Thermal transfer is mostly used for products with large volume and complicated printing. Belongs to attach a film on the surface. The price is high.

Offset printing: mostly used for aluminum-plastic hoses and all-plastic hoses. If the offset printing is made on colored hose, then silk printing must be used. Offset printing shows the background color of the material.
